Red Lake County used a strong running attack to defeat Polk County West 39-13 Wednesday night in Climax.

The Rebels scored first on a 13 play, 43 yard drive that took 8:42.  Ben Gullingsrud scored on a one yard run, then Boe Nelson ran for a 2 point conversion to put Red Lake County in front 8-0 after the first quarter.

Polk County West had a long scoring drive of its own in the second quarter; 15 plays, 54 yards in 8:31.  Micah Zavoral threw a 2 yard TD pass to Ti Davis.  The PAT failed, cutting the Thunder’s deficit to 8-6 late in the first half.

The Rebels got on the board again just before halftime when Gunnar Halverson ran 53 yards for a TD. Ethan Johnson’s run for the conversion put Red Lake County ahead 16-6 at halftime.

Red Lake County sealed the victory with 3 third quarter scores.  Nelson on a 4 yard run, Halverson on a 55 yard run and Nate Powers on a 20 yard run.  The Rebels led 39-6 after 3 quarters.

Polk County West’s Dylan Larson scored on a 3 yard run in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 39-12 and that ended the scoring.

Red Lake County (7-1, 5-1 Section 8A) had 13 first downs and 336 yards total offense.  Connor Duden completed 1 of 6 passes for 6 yards with Gullickson catching the only pass for the Rebels.  Halverson rushed 10 times for 143 yards and 2 TDs, Nelson 4 carries for 68 yards and a TD, Avery Knott 50 yards on 5 carries, Powers one carry for 25 yards and a TD, Gullingsrud 8 carries for 13 yards and a TD, Mason Williams 12 yards on one carry, Gunnar Broden 9 yards on 3 carries.  The Rebels had 8 penalties for 50 yards.

Polk County West (3-5, 2-4) had 11 first downs and 209 yards total offense.  Micah Zavoral was 3 for 8 passing for 20 yards with a touchdown and an interception.  Ti Davis caught 2 passes for 10 yards and a touchdown; Jaycer Davis caught one pass for 10 yards.  Dylan Larson ran 8 times for 62 yards and a TD, Jace Motl had 60 yards on 12 carries, Ti Davis 7 carries for 56 yards.  The Thunder were penalized 8 times for 65 yards.

Both teams await the pairings for the playoffs….with first round games next Tuesday.
