Fertile, MN — The Stephen/Argyle Storm made a statement Friday night, handing the Fertile-Beltrami Falcons their first regular season loss since 2020 with a 50-30 victory.

Fertile-Beltrami opened with the ball but lasted less than two minutes before turning it over on downs at the Storm’s 48-yard line. Stephen/Argyle quickly marched down the field, capped off by a 3-yard touchdown run from Kellen Johnson. After forcing a punt on the Falcons’ next drive, the Storm struck again on the very next play when Raydon Woinarowicz took a toss 80 yards to the end zone, giving Stephen/Argyle a two-score lead in the first quarter.

The Falcons answered with a 74-yard screen pass to Bryer Strem to cut into the deficit, but their defense could never get the big stop as the Storm would again punch in another touchdown with 9:39 to play in the half to make it 22-8. On the next drive, Fertile-Beltram would march into the red zone but on 4th-and-goal, Stephen/Argyle’s Anders Thompson picked off a pass at the goal line and raced 99 yards the other way for a back-breaking touchdown, extending the Storm’s lead to 28-8 late in the half. Fertile-Beltrami managed to respond before the break, engineering a 69-yard scoring drive in the final two minutes to make it 28-16 at halftime.

Stephen/Argyle opened the second half with a methodical 7-minute drive that ended with quarterback Shay Setterholm connecting with Woinarowicz for a 20-yard touchdown on 4th down, stretching the lead to 36-16 and all but ending hopes of a Falcon comeback. Fertile-Beltrami could never get the stop or spark they needed, as the Storm kept control the rest of the way en route to a 50-30 win.

With the victory, Stephen/Argyle (1-0) hands Fertile-Beltrami (0-1) its first regular season loss in nearly five years. The Storm will host Border West in Week 2, while the Falcons have a bye before traveling to Goodridge/Grygla on September 5.
