Jake Howard scored 40 points as the Fosston Greyhounds defeated the Mahnomen/Waubun Thunderbirds 85-82 at the Fosston Gym on Monday night. The Greyhounds hit 16 three pointers with Howard connecting on 8 triples and Jack Sekley hitting 7 three pointers. Sekely scored 27 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as the Greyhounds improved to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the Pine to Prairie Conference. Freshman Quinten Lundell came off the bench to score 12 points for Fosston. Brody Lhotka led the Thunderbirds with 23 points and 11 rebounds as Mahnomen/Waubun falls to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the conference. Taden Larson added 21 points and Tommy Phillips 18 points for Mahnomen/Waubun. The Greyhounds led 76-59 with 5:26 left in the game but the Thunderbirds came storming back to pull to within one point at 81-80. It was the first game Fosston played since they hosted Climax/Fisher back on December 12th. The Greyhounds won despite turning the ball over 25 times compared to 16 turnovers for Mahnomen/Waubun. Fosston won the “B” Squad game 39-38 as Luke Wedin hit two free throws for Fosston with 18 seconds left in the game.
