GBB Valley City 60, Carrington 59
Katie Burchill’s 3-point play with 10.7 seconds to play gave Valley City a 60-59 victory over Carrington Saturday to earn a trip to the State Class A Girls Basketball Tournament.
Valley City (19-4) led for most of the game and was in front 54-44 in the fourth quarter. But Carrington came back to go ahead 59-57 as Mya Neis scored 7 points in the final frame and the Cardinals held a 59-57 lead.
Then Burchill gathered an offensive rebound, scored to tie the game at 59, and was fouled. She made the free throw that put the Hi-Liners back in the lead 60-59 and they were able to hold that lead.
Burchill led the defending Class A champions with 22 points and 9 rebounds. Skye Nielson added 17 points as she made all of her shots–2 2 point baskets, 3 3 point baskets, and 4 of 4 at the free throw line. Nielson also had a team high 6 assists and 2 steals.
Carrington (20-5) had 21 points from sophomore Aniston Hoornaert, 18 from Marah Johnson and 10 from Nies.
Valley City will face Devils Lake in the second quarterfinal Thursday at the State A tournament from Jamestown.
