Clearbrook-Gonvick at Red Lake

Red Lake, MN — The Clearbrook-Gonvick Bears outlasted the Red Lake Warriors in the first round of the Section 8A Boys Basketball Tournament, beating the Warriors in overtime 87–83.

These two teams met twice in the regular season, with Clearbrook-Gonvick winning both games by a combined total of four points, setting the stage for Thursday night’s playoff matchup.

Red Lake was firing on all cylinders offensively in the first half. After both teams traded buckets early, the Warriors put together a 12–0 run to take a 26–10 lead. While Red Lake looked poised to run away with it, Clearbrook-Gonvick struggled to find rhythm and quality looks. But the Bears weathered the storm and stayed composed. Led by a pair of juniors—Grant Engen, who scored 15 first-half points, and Avery Ostenna, who ripped down 12 first-half rebounds and dominated inside—Clearbrook-Gonvick responded with a massive 26–2 run to take the lead late in the half and head into the locker room up 42–33.

In the second half, Clearbrook-Gonvick held the lead for most of the way, though it never grew beyond 10 points. Red Lake got a big night from junior Austin Perkins, who scored 12 of his 18 points after halftime, and from Dimitrius Harris, who finished with 32 points. The Warriors surged ahead 69–66 with 11 minutes to play. They would not lead again, but they did just enough to tie the game at 79–79 and force overtime.

In overtime, both teams were shorthanded, as Clearbrook-Gonvick had three players foul out in regulation and Red Lake had two. Clearbrook-Gonvick’s Carver Kroulick drilled a three-pointer to open the extra period, and the Bears never trailed again, holding off the Warriors for the 87–83 win.

With the victory, Clearbrook-Gonvick improves to 8–18 and advances to the Section Quarterfinals at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls for the first time since the mid-2000s. The Bears will face Stephen/Argyle in the 5:15 p.m. game on Saturday. Red Lake’s season ends at 15–12.
