Minnesota Senate passes Omnibus Firearms Bill
After hours of debate on the senate floor, the Minnesota Senate passed an Omnibus Firearms Bill that would ban the sale of assault-type weapons and high capacity magazines, among other items including funding for school safety. During the debate, bill author Senator Zaynab Mohamed (DFL-Minneapolis) highlighted everything that’s included in the bill.
The bill faced staunch republican opposition, including from Senate Minority leader Mark Johnson (R-East Grand Forks), who called on Senate Democrats to “focus on solutions not slogans” as the bill will likely stall in the Minnesota House of Representatives.
The bill comes in the wake of the Annunciation Catholic Church shooting, and Senator Mohamed had the Senate hold a moment of silence to honor the victims.
The bill will now move to the Minnesota House of Representatives where its future is murky.
