Staples-Motley at Pillager
Preview
It was another close matchup between two big rivals as Staples-Motley held on for a 6-5 win over Pillager in a non-conference, Section 6AA battle.
The Cardinals scored in the opening frame without a hit, then pushed two more across in the top of the second to go up 3-0. The Huskies responded with three in the bottom half to tie the game at 3. A 2-run single by Colbe Tappe put Staples-Motley back in front in the top of the fourth. Then, he hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth to give the Cardinals a three-run lead again at 6-3.
The Huskies started to rally once again, as Colbe relieved brother Cooper Tappe on the mound after he reached the daily pitch limit. Colbe struggled with control, and Pillager scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth with the help of four walks and a couple wild pitches. Tappe was able to work out of the sixth and faced the minimum in the seventh to secure the one-run victory for the Cardinals.
The close matchup was the sixth in the last seven meetings that was decided by three runs or fewer.
The Cardinals go to 15-3 on the year while the Huskies fall to 6-9.
