The Grafton Spoiler defense stifled the Hillsboro/Central Valley Burros offense after halftime to open the season, leading Grafton to a 12-8 victory.

Grafton’s offense opened the game by driving 80 yards in just five plays for a 6-0 lead in the opening minutes. Hillsboro/Central Valley immediately responded with a scoring drive of its own, with a 24-yard touchdown pass on fourth down giving the Burros an 8-6 lead following a successful two-point conversion with 5:17 remaining in the first quarter.

The remainder of the game was primarily controlled by the defenses, with neither offense able to generate much momentum. As the offensive production dwindled, field position became a premium—and that was an area Grafton controlled after halftime.

A Burro penalty on a Grafton punt return gave the Spoilers the ball at the Burro 36-yard line late in the third quarter. Grafton took advantage of the short field, driving for the go-ahead score out of the Wildcat formation. The Spoilers capped the drive with an 8-yard touchdown run with just 12 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

This time, Grafton would not surrender the lead. The Spoilers’ aggressive defense shut down the Burros in the second half, holding Hillsboro/Central Valley without a single yard of total offense gained after halftime.

Grafton will take its 1-0 record on the road next week against MayPort-C-G, while the 0-1 Hillsboro/Central Valley Burros will host rival Thompson in Week 2.
