Northwest Technical College Relocating to Bemidji State University
In a major shift for local higher education, Northwest Technical College (NTC) will move its operations directly onto the Bemidji State University (BSU) campus, allowing the university to sell the current NTC property. The relocation stems from an 18-month facilities plan designed to adapt to an increase in adult and online learners, which has reduced BSU’s need for traditional on-campus housing. To optimize space, BSU may demolish two underutilized residence halls, Oak Hall and Pine Hall, while reinvesting in Tamarack Hall and constructing a modern industrial and trades lab facility on campus to accommodate NTC’s growing enrollment.
Beyond expanding trade facilities, the consolidation resolves financial challenges by eliminating $1 million in annual facility operating expenses and clearing a large portion of BSU’s $10 million deferred maintenance backlog. BSU & NTC President Dr. John L. Hoffman emphasized that saved funds will be redirected back into faculty and staff, confirming there will be no cuts to jobs or academic programs. Design plans beginning this spring will cover both the new industrial trade labs and a shared “one-stop” student services center, funded through a mix of state support, fundraising, and public-private partnerships. Although sharing a single physical campus, BSU and NTC will maintain their separate identities as four-year and two-year institutions.
