As temperatures plunge across northern Minnesota, local residents have rallied together to ensure their neighbors stay warm this winter. Through the United Way’s annual Coats for the Community program, more than 425 winter clothing items were collected and distributed this fall to families throughout Clearwater County.

The main distribution event took place on October 29 at the Bagley American Legion, where tables were stocked with coats, boots, snow pants, hats, scarves, gloves, and mittens suited for infants to adults. Over the course of the day, approximately 100 area residents received essential cold-weather gear to help prepare them for the upcoming season.

Organizers noted that the initiative provides crucial relief for local households classified as ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed). These families work and earn above the federal poverty level but still struggle to afford basic necessities. In Clearwater County, more than four in 10 households fall beneath the ALICE threshold. Receiving free winter apparel helps ease financial pressure, allowing families to redirect hard-earned paychecks toward critical expenses like heating, rent, and groceries.

For community members who still need winter gear, remaining coats and winter items have been transferred to Community Resource Connections, located at 13 Central St. West in Bagley. Organizers encourage anyone in need of cold-weather clothing to stop by, and those interested in learning more about local initiatives can visit unitedwaybemidji.org.
