Oklee, MN — The RLCC Mustangs picked up a 19 point win, 69-50, over the Clearbrook-Gonvick Bears on Thursday night to improve to 7-15 with three games to go in the regular season.

RLCC knew that if they wanted to come out on the winning end of this game they would need to slow down Clearbrook-Gonvick’s leading scorer, Sophomore Allison LaVine. While the Mustangs didn’t slow down LaVine’s scoring ability, she had 33 points, they did wear her down as the night went on. RLCC Coach Mitch Bernstein implemented a defensive scheme that they call their “one dog defense,” meaning a defender stuck to the hip of LaVine and that was their only job. This defense did eventually wear LaVine down making it harder for her to get offensive looks and relied on others to score and it eventually lead to more Clearbrook-Gonvick turnovers and more offensive opportunities for RLCC.

Those opportunities turned into easy points late for the Mustangs and in the end, were able to pull away for the 69-50 win. RLCC is now 7-15 with just three games left to play. They will host Warren-Alvarado-Oslo on Friday night. Clearbrook-Gonvick Falls to 2-20 and has only two games left including their next matchup next Tuesday at Thief River Falls.
