Memorial Day Poppies

It’s a tradition around Memorial Day.  You’ll find poppies in area businesses with requests for donations.  Craig Larson, commander of Ada VFW post 7557, talks about poppies and how donations are used.

If you’re wondering why poppies are associated with Memorial Day, in 1915 Lt. Colonel John McCrae with the Canadian Army saw poppies blooming on a battlefield where many soldiers had died.  That inspired him to write the poem “In Flanders Fields.”    Memorial Day is Monday, May 29.
