Fischbach backs McCarthy as House votes to oust him. McCarthy voted out
Minnesota 7th District Representative Michelle Fischbach voiced her support for Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy after a Republican group led by Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz motioned to remove McCarthy from his position of Speaker of the House.
In her post on X Representative Fischbach said that “@SpeakerMcCarthy works tirelessly to move conservative agendas forward. In 9 months, we’ve seen the largest spending cuts in a decade, the end of the omnibus, and an impeachment inquiry into the president. Congress doesn’t have time for these games. We need to get back to work.”
McCarthy has been under fire from some House Republicans after he had worked with House Democrats to pass a stopgap measure that temporarily averted a government shutdown. This group led by Gatez wanted to push for deeper spending cuts which would have most likely led to a shutdown of the government on October 1.
This isn’t the first time groups of Republican lawmakers have clashed with McCarthy as a group of them had fought his confirmation into the Speaker of the House position back in January. If ousted as Speaker of the House the House of Representatives would have to elect a new speaker.
Some candidates that could be considered for the next speaker include House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana, and Majority Whip Tom Emmer of Minnesota. Some wild card candidates like Jim Jordan could also be considered.
UPDATE: Speaker Kevin McCarthy was voted out of his position earlier today a first in U.S. history. The final vote was 216-210. Representative Matt Gaetz , brought forward the motion drawing together more than a handful of conservative Republican critics of the speaker and many Democrats who say he is unworthy of leadership.
