Anthrax Confirmed In Kittson County Cow
An anthrax case has been confirmed in Kittson County—Minnesota’s first anthrax case in animals in over ten years. The Minnesota Board of Animal Health says a horse and multiple cattle have been affected and the property has been quarantined. Anthrax in animals typically occurs in the summer and affects livestock grazing on pasture, especially cattle, sheep and goats. The Board of Animal Health recommends keeping livestock up to date on anthrax vaccinations, especially in northwest Minnesota.
Also, anthrax in animals is not a risk to the public. The disease is spread through contact with affected animals or their products. Although the risk is low, if you’ve had contact with animals that have died of anthrax, consult your doctor or the Minnesota Department of Health.
