Essentia Health Proposes Expansion To Fosston Hospital

FOSSTON, MN—The dispute between Fosston Hospital and Essentia Health has taken a new turn. On Wednesday, Essentia Health announced preliminary plans to expand Fosston’s emergency department—changing the current 1100 square foot space to 6700 square feet. Essentia’s statement says the expansion “will greatly improve patient flow…, employee and patient safety, infection control…and overall efficiency.” The expansion would also include a new ambulance bay and special rooms for patients who need behavioral health care. This $12 million investment is awaiting approval from Essentia Health’s Board of Directors.
You’ll remember last November, the City of Fosston severed its agreement with Essentia Health to operate the Fosston Hospital effective the end of this year. The City was unhappy with Essentia’s decision to stop delivering babies in 2022. More recently, Fosston residents have complained about long waits for ambulance service.
R&J News has reached out to Fosston City Administrator Cassie Heide and to Essentia Health for comment about Wednesday’s announcement.
