Oklee, MN — The Red Lake County Rebels start their season 5-0 after defeating the Clearbrook-Gonvick Bears 96-42 on Tuesday night. The victory also marked the 700th career win for Hall of Fame Head Coach Steve Philion.
The Clearbrook-Gonvick Bears were extremely short handed in Tuesday night’s contest missing five key players due to sickness and that forced some young guys to step in to action. The Rebels took advantage right away building and early 10-2 lead. That lead would continue to grow to 20-5 at the halfway point of the first half. The Rebels would eventually lead 54-28 at halftime.
In the second half RLC would score the first 10 points to lead 64-28. The lead would continue to grow as the night wore on for Red Lake County and the Rebels would be victorious 96-42.
Red Lake County is now 5-0 on the season and will play at Ada-Borup-West on Friday. Clearbrook-Gonvick falls to 3-3 and will be on the road at Bagley on Thursday.
Tuesday night’s win was career win #700 for Red Lake County Head Coach Steve Philion. Coach Philion began his coaching career in 1975 at the helm of the Gonvick-Trail Bulldogs. He later led the co-op of Clearbrook-Gonvick to State Tournament appearances in 1992 and 1993. Philion returned to his hometown of Red Lake Falls in 1998 as the Head Coach of Red Lake Falls – Red Lake County. Philion was inducted into the Minnesota High School Boys Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2016 and led the Red Lake County Rebels to a Section 8A Championship and 3rd place finish at the State Tournament in 2024.
