Bagley, MN — The Clearbrook-Gonvick Bears have bragging rights in Clearwater County for another year after sweeping the Bagley Flyers 3-0 and winning the coveted ‘Smackdown of Clearwater County’ travelling trophy.

Clearbrook-Gonvick in set one secured an early 3-0 lead and never looked back after that. Bagley cut the lead late to 21-16 but would never get any closer as Clearbrook-Gonvick cruised to the 25-17 set one win and seized momentum into the second set. Bagley would score the first two points of set two, but Clearbrook-Gonvick would go on a 6-0 run to go up by four and triggered Bagley’s first timeout of the set. The Flyers would make a run to cut the deficit to 10-9 but Clearbrook-Gonvick, as they did all night, would go on an 8-2 run, taking an 18-11 lead and eventually win 25-17. Set three started like the first two, early scoring by C-G, early timeout by Bagley. The Flyers took a timeout trailing 7-4 and would find themselves in a hole with their backs against the wall down17-10. From there, Bagley would go on a 9-2 run to tie the set 19-19. Both teams would trade blows for the remainder of the set but it was the Clearbrook-Gonvick Bears winning 28-26 and winning the match 3-0.

Since it’s inception in 2018, the Clearbrook-Gonvick Bears have won the ‘Smackdown of Clearwater County’ match six of seven times. Bagley won the intercounty rivalry for the first time in 2022. Clearbrook-Gonvick is now 2-0 on the season and will host the Mahnomen/Thunderbirds next Tuesday (96.7 FM KKCQ). Bagley falls to 1-2 and will play next on Saturday at Ada-Borup-West in the Ruth Hayden Tournament of Roses.
