Recap

The Thompson Tommies hosted the Devils Lake Firebirds in a critical ND Division A Region Two girls basketball matchup Monday. The Tommies started strong, but the Firebirds flew back into the game, hitting clutch shots down the stretch to claim their first victory over the Tommies in the three-class era, 56-47.

Thompson led 20-8 with less than three minutes to go in the opening half, when Devils Lake caught fire. The Firebirds closed out the opening half on a 15-0 run to lead 23-20 at the break. Both teams would exchange buckets and leads in the third, with Devils Lake leading by just one going into the fourth. DL’s Tylie Brodina put on a show in the final quarter of regulation, hitting three of her five three-pointers in the final eight minutes. That, along with Devils Lake sinking twelve of sixteen free-throws in the second half, helped the Firebirds stave off the Tommies. Thompson had several chances in the final quarter to get close, but some costly turnovers killed any chance of a comeback. Thompson also missed five free throws in the 4th.

Brodina led all of Devils Lake’s nine sorcerers with 21 points. Kya Hurst (15), Addison Sage (12), and Claire Kolling (11) all reached double figures for the Tommies. With wins over both Carrington and Thompson, Devils Lake is in the driver’s seat for the region’s number one seed. The 9-1 Firebirds return to DL to host Turtle Mountain on Thursday. The Tommies, also in action Thursday, will look to get back on track as they clash with Central Cass.
