GBB ND Class A Qualifier Valley City 62, Carrington 56
Freshman Katie Burchill had 25 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots as Valley City defeated Carrington 62-56 Saturday in a Class A State girls basketball qualifier at Mayville State University.
In a see-saw first half with seven lead changes and six ties, Valley City finished the half on an 8-3 run to go ahead 31-29 at intermission. The Hi-Liners scored the first six points of the third quarter to take an eight point advantage. Carrington fought back to cut the deficit to three points after three quarters, 44-41.
Valley City pulled ahead to stay in the fourth quarter as Burchill scored 12 of her team high 25 points, including four of five at the free throw line.
Three other Hi-Liners scored in double figures: Drew Potratz, Tesa Olson and Kailee Nielsen each scored ten points as Valley City improved to 18-7 on the season and advanced to the Class A State Tournament Thursday at Minot State University.
Madison Johnson scored 15 points and Isabel Wendel 14 to lead Carrington. The Cardinals end the year with a 17-8 record.
Valley City is the number 7 seed at State. The Hi-Liners will take on number 2 seed Bottineau in the first game of the tournament Thursday afternoon.
