South Prairie-Max 53, Thompson 52

Abby Mikkelson’s three point basket with 16 seconds to play gave South Prairie-Max a 53-52 win over Thompson in the Class A Girls Basketball State Tournament semifinals Friday night at Minot State University.  In the process, the Royals snapped Thompson’s 23 game unbeaten streak.

Thompson was behind the entire game, down by 13 late in the second quarter, before taking their first lead on an Addison Sage three-pointer with 4:56 to play.  The Tommies would build that lead to 51-45 on a Brenna Martin layup with 2:28 to go.

Then it was South Prairie-Max’s turn to rally.  Rylee Routledge hit a three, then Azjiah Trader made a layup with 1:24 to play, cutting Thompson’s lead to 51-50.  Thompson’s Sydney Schwabe made one of two free throws with 27 seconds to play, giving the Tommies a two point cushion.  The Royals went downcourt and Mikkelson hit a three from the top of the key to put South Prairie-Max back in the lead 53-52.

Thompson had one final chance, but Sage’s three pointer was off the mark and the Royals advanced to Saturday’s State Championship game against Devils Lake.  Devils Lake edged Valley City 59-57 in Friday’s other semifinal.

Routledge led South Prairie-Max with 14 points.  Skotti Beck added 12 points, Trader 11 and Mikkelson ten as the Royals improve to 23-3 on the season.

Sage scored 19 points for Thompson, Schwabe had 11 along with eight steals.  The 23-1 Tommies will play Valley City for third place Saturday afternoon at 3.  YourLiveEvent.com will have audio only coverage starting at approximately 2:45.
