Softball   HCV 28, Enderlin 18 (5 innings)

Avery Merck hit a grand slam and drove in 5 runs and 7 Burros had at least 3 hits as Hillsboro/Central Valley 28-18 in 5 innings Thursday at Hillsboro.

It was a windy day that caused many problems for defenders on both teams.  Enderlin jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, with HCV getting a run back in their half of the first.

In the second inning, the Eagles batted around, scoring 5 runs to go ahead 8-1.  HCV countered in their half of the second with 9 runs as 13 Burros came to the plate.  Avery Merck hit a grand slam to left field for the biggest hit of the inning.  HCV led 10-8 after 2 innings.

The scoring continued in the third, with Enderlin getting one run and HCV 4 to take a 14-9 lead.  And while Enderlin scored a run in their half of the fourth, the Burros put up a 10 spot in the bottom of the fourth; Kyah Chenault had a 2 run double and Brooklyn Hanekamp a 2 run single to put the Burros ahead 24-10 after 4 innings.

Enderlin didn’t quit, though…scoring 7 runs in the top of the fifth as 12 Eagles came to the plate.  Karina Olson’s 2-run single was the biggest hit of the inning for Enderlin, who made the score 24-18 in favor of HCV.

In the bottom of the 5th, the Burros had 3 straight singles, followed by a bases clearing triple by Kiera Kozojed to make it 27-18.  Then a wild pitch allowed Kozojed to score the game-ending run and make the final 28-18.

Karina Olson had 3 hits and 3 rbi for Enderlin (2-4, 2-3 Region 1B) with Kaitlyn Maasjo, Jana Olson and Renna Evanson also having 3 hits apiece.  Jana Olson and Maasjo drove in 2 runs apiece.

Kozojed was 4 for 6 for HCV (8-2, 5-1) with 4 rbi and 3 runs scored.  Merck was 3 for 5 with 5 rbi; Evelyn Willison was 4 for 5 with 3 runs scored and a run batted in; Brooklyn Hanekamp and Sanna Kritzberger both had 3 hits and 3 rbi, while Kyah Chenault was 2 for 5 with 3 rbi.

Chenault was the winning pitcher for Hillsboro/Central Valley; Evenson took the loss.

HCV is off until Tuesday, when they travel to undefeated and top-ranked Central Cass.  Enderlin plays at LaMoure/Litchville/Marion on Monday.
