Goodridge, MN — The Fertile-Beltrami Falcons hung on for a 65-57 win over the Goodridge/Grygla Chargers Friday night, tallying their sixth win in a row.

The Falcons opened the game efficiently on the offensive end, building a commanding 28-9 lead. The Chargers, desperate to get their offense off the ground, rattled off an 11-3 scoring surge to draw closer but still trailed by double figures, 31-20, late in the half. Fertile-Beltrami then scored the final nine points of the first half and took firm control of the game, leading 39-20 going into the locker room.

In the second half, however, Goodridge/Grygla shot the ball at an extremely high clip, scoring 17 of the first 19 points of the half to cut the deficit to 41-37. Once the Chargers made it a single-digit game, they hung with Fertile-Beltrami, never allowing the deficit to grow larger than ten points. Goodridge/Grygla made eight 3-pointers in the second half and trailed by just six with two minutes to play.

The Chargers were forced to play the foul game late, sending the Falcons to the free-throw line to seal the win, but Fertile-Beltrami shot just 30% at the line in the second half, leaving the door cracked for a potential upset. Despite the Falcons giving them a chance by missing free throws, Goodridge/Grygla couldn’t muster any quality looks in the final possessions, allowing Fertile-Beltrami to hang on for the 65-57 victory.

Fertile-Beltrami improves to 21-3 on the year and will play three games next week to close out the regular season, starting with a visit to Cass Lake-Bena on Monday. Goodridge/Grygla, meanwhile, has lost five games in a row, falling to 12-13 overall. The Chargers close out their regular season next Monday at Fosston.
