The Badger/Greenbush-Middle River Gators overcame a seven point deficit in the second half and rallied to beat the Fosston Greyhounds 53-50 Friday night in Thief River Falls in the Section 8A championship game. B/G-MR jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never trailed in the first half as they took a 23-18 lead into halftime. The Greyhounds came storming back and went on a 15-3 run in the second half to take a 33-28 lead. The Greyhounds took their first lead at 26-25 with 15:14 remaining in the second half and led by seven twice at 38-31 and 46-39.. Some missed free throws and layups cost the Greyhounds and the Gators took advantage as they qualified for their first State Tournament since 2007. The Greyhounds were trying to get to the State Tournament for the first time since 2006. Sophomore Kenzie Dahl led the Gators with 15 points as B/G-MR won their 16th straight game and improve to 26-3 overall. Kinsley Hanson added 13 points and Jade Reese 12 points for the Gators. Brynlea Mahlen had a big night for the Greyhounds as she hit four 3 pointers and scored 19 points. Katelyn Vesledahl added 12 points and Kinsely Duppong 11 points for Fosston as the Greyhounds had their 11 game winning streak snapped and end the season at 24-4. The Greyhounds had defeated the Gators 55-41 on January 17th in Fosston. The Greyhounds committed 19 turnovers and the Gators had 16 turnovers in the game. The Gators will play in the State “A” Tournament next week in the Twin Cities.
