The Northwest Region Northern Substate American Legion Baseball championship game turned out to be a pitchers duel as Fosston edged Warroad 2-1 Sunday in Ada.
The game was tied 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh, when Fosston loaded the bases with one out. Aaron Norland’s ground ball was booted by Warroad shortstop Liam Grover…and that allowed Zach Theis to score the winning run.
Fosston opened the scoring in the first inning when Cullen Norland led off with a double, went to third on a fly ball, then Aaron Norland hit a grounder and Warroad tried to get Cullen Norland attempting to score, but Cullen was safe and Post 114 had a 1-0 lead.
Warroad responded in the second as Kanon Hoffman reached second on a throwing error by pitcher Cullen Norland. One out and two walks later, Post 25 had the bases loaded. Wesley Schreiner hit into a fielder’s choice at second, allowing Hoffman to score the tying run.
Both teams had chances to break the deadlock. In the fourth, Fosston’s Aiden Wolfe tried to score on a Cullen Norland double but was cut down at home. Warroad had the bases loaded in the fifth with one out, when Mitch Mowry threw out Schreiner at home trying to score on Sam Hard’s grounder.
Cullen Norland got the win for Fosston. In 7 innings, he allowed 6 hits, one run (0 earned runs), 2 walks, one hit batter, and 4 strikeouts with a wild pitch.
Kason Pietruszewski took the loss for Warroad. In 6 1/3 innings, he gave up 7 hits, 2 runs (one earned), one walk, 2 hit batters with 4 strikeouts.
Pietruszewski and Jacob McFarlane both had two hits for Warroad. Cullen Norland and Theis had two hits apiece for Fosston.
Fosston and Warroad both move on to the next round of the American Legion playoffs starting Thursday in Red Lake Falls.
