Charlie Yon rushed for 2 fourth quarter touchdowns and a 2 point conversion to give Thompson a come from behind 14-12 victory over Grafton Friday night in Thompson.
The game was a defensive struggle in the first half. It was scoreless until 1:22 remained in the second quarter when Brody Lillemoen connected with Aidan McMillian on an 11 yard TD pass. A run for the 2 point conversion failed, giving the Spoilers a 6-0 lead at the half.
The Spoilers doubled this lead in the quarter after blocking a Thompson punt. Grafton recovered at the Thompson 25. On the next play, Lillemoen hit Augie Miller with a 25 yard TD pass. The Spoilers went for a 2 point conversion, but the run failed, making the score 12-0 with 7:05 to go in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Thompson got on the board when Yon scored on a 2 yard run. That finished an 11 play, 65 yard drive. The Tommies’ pass for a 2 point conversion was incomplete, cutting Grafton’s lead to 12-6 with 10:06 to play in regulation.
On Grafton’s ensuing possession, Thompson’s Joe Taylor picked off a Lillemoen pass, giving the Tommies the ball at their own 44 with 8:02 to play. 9 plays later, Thompson took the lead when Yon scored on a 9 yard run to tie the game at 12. Yon ran for the 2 point conversion to put Thompson ahead 14-12 with 3:03 to play.
Grafton drove to Thompson’s 25 yard line, but a penalty for an ineligible receiver downfield drove the Spoilers back…and a one yard run, followed by 2 incomplete passes forced Grafton to turn the ball over on downs with 47 seconds to play.
Yon rushed 24 times for 89 yards to lead Thompson (5-3, 4-2 in Region 2A). Quarterback Gavin Oster completed 19 passes in 31 attempts for 107 yards with one interception. Thompson had 98 yards rushing and 107 yards passing for 205 yards total offense. The Tommies also had 17 first downs and 4 penalties for 50 yards.
Lillemoen completed 11 of 24 passes for 125 yards with 2 touchdowns and one interception. McMillian caught 4 passes for 69 yards. Noah Suda was the Spoilers’ top rusher with 29 yards on 12 carries. The Spoilers had 174 yards total offense with 125 passing and 49 on the ground.
Thompson plays at Carrington next Thursday. Grafton (5-3, 4-2) plays Thursday at top-ranked Langdon Area-Munich.
