Recap

The Thompson Tommies opened the 2024 fall football season with a rivalry clash against the Grafton Spoilers. The Tommies got on the board early and never looked back enroute to a 39-6 victory.

Despite the Tommies never trailing in this game, it looked like Grafton would get on board first. Spoiler senior, Kruiser Burns, took the opening kickoff to the Tommie 25 to set Grafton up nicely. Just two plays later, Grafton’s hopes of spoiling the home opener were dashed by Cash Danner’s interception in the end zone.

That kicked off a season opening drive to the end zone for the Tommie offense. Senior starting quarterback, Gavin Krogstad, didn’t look like it was his first start, leading the Tommies on a 13-play, 65-yard drive, taking it into the end zone himself from four yards out to make it 6-0 Tommies.

After a Grafton punt, Thompson went back to work, marching the ball down the field again, ending with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Krogstad to fellow senior, Thomas Schumacher. Schumacher added his second extra point of the night to make it 14-0 Tommies.

Grafton would get on the board late in the first half, turning a Thompson fumble into a 19-yard passing touchdown from senior quarterback, Kyler Droog, to junior Reggie Rice to make it 14-6. That’s as close as the Spoilers would get as on the next possession, Krogstad and Schumacher connected once again in the first half, this time from 26 yards out, to make it a 20-6 halftime lead.

After a sluggish start to the second half, the Tommies found the end zone three more times, all on the ground, with 32-yard scores from senior, Josh Juve and junior, Charlie Yon and a ten-yard scamper from freshman, Mak Mikelson. Those three touchdowns and an extra point totaled that 39-6 final score.

Krogstad finished the night with three total touchdowns and nearly 200 all-purpose yards. He also picked up a few tackles and an interception, with his only miscue being a fumble. Krogstad, Juve, senior, Will Welke, Yon, and sophomore, Eli Gemmill, all reached 45 yards on the ground. Grafton’s entire team tallied just 54 yards of total offense with three turnovers.

Thompson starts the season at 1-0, leaving Oakes as the only Region 1 team without a win to start the season. Grafton falls to 0-2 with nearly identical scorelines between week one’s loss to Hillsboro/Central Valley and this one. Thompson battles the Burros next Friday, September 6th, on Your Live Event for HCV’s homecoming. Grafton will look to get in the win column when they host Carrington next Friday.
