Recap

The Hillsboro/Central Valley Girls Basketball team hosted the Hatton/Northwood Thunder in a Division A/B, Traill County rivalry clash Tuesday. Both teams battled well throughout, but the Thunder pulled away in the fourth quarter, securing a 55-44 victory.

The Burros secured an 18-15 lead at the end of the first quarter, sinking two three-pointers and eight of ten free throws in the first eight minutes. After a combined 33 points in the opening quarter, the offenses stalled, as both teams mustered a combined dozen in the second. The Burros would take the 23-22 lead into halftime.

After committing 13 turnovers in the first half to HCV’s five, the Thunder took better care of the ball and turned up the defense themselves, turning the tide in their favor with a 16-10 third quarter. The Thunder would pull away in the fourth, outscoring the Burros in the final eight minutes, 17-11 to claim the victory.

Kennison Azure and Elizabeth Pinke combined for 50 of the Thunder’s 55 points and 20 of the team’s 33 rebounds in the victory. Azure finished with a double-double 29 points and twelve rebounds. Paityn Olson led the Burros with 15 points and five rebounds. Megan Ensign also chipped in 13 for HCV in the setback.

The Thunder improve to 4-1 with the win while the Burros drop to 2-3 with the loss. The Thunder will finally get a home game in their next contests, back-to-back games against Cavalier and North Prairie on the 27 and 28th respectively. The Burros have a quicker turnaround as they travel to Maple River on Friday.
