Hillsboro-Central Valley 60, Grafton 56

Hillsboro-Central Valley stormed to a 16 point lead late in the first half and then made eight of nine free throws in the fourth quarter to upset 6th-ranked Grafton 60-56 Tuesday in Grafton.

Burros forward Peter Dryburgh scored seven first quarter points as HCV took an 18-11 lead after the first frame.  They stretched the lead to 29-13 late in the second quarter and were in front 29-19 at halftime.

Grafton came back in the second half, cutting the Burros’ lead to 41-35 after three quarters.  Late in the game, the Spoilers’ Braylon Baldwin stole the ball and fed Tony Villareal for a layup that cut HCV’s lead to 57-56 with 28.3 seconds to play.

The Burros’ Dryburgh made one of two free throws to raise the advantage to 58-56.  Then after Baldwin drove for a layup and missed, HCV’s Jacob Brandt got the rebound and was fouled.  He made both free throws to make it 60-56 with 5.4 seconds remaining.  Grafton’s Baldwin stumbled on one final drive at midcourt and the game was over.

Brandt had 19 points for Hillsboro-Central Valley, with Dryburgh scoring 15 and Landon Olson 13.  The Burros snap a three game losing streak and improve to 5-4 overall and 2-0 in Region 2 play.

Grafton was led by Baldwin’s 19 points–including buzzer-beating three pointers at the end of the first and third quarters.  Villareal had 12 points and Kyler Droog ten for the Spoilers…who are now 6-2 on the year and 0-2 in Region 2 play.

Both teams are back in action Thursday; HCV plays at Mayport-CG while Grafton hosts Hatton-Northwood.
