The Northern Cass Jaguars welcomed the Hillsboro/Central Valley Burros in a ND Class B Volleyball matchup Monday. The match went the distance, with the Burros outlasting the Jaguars in five sets: 25-20, 25-12, 22-25, 19-25, 15-10.

The Burros got off to a hot start thanks in no small part to sophomore, Abigail Anderson’s four aces in the opening set. That helped the Burros build a 24-15 lead. With set point in reach, the Jaguars went on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to four, but a service error killed the momentum, giving the Burros the opening set. HCV would carry that momentum into the second set, as a balanced attack both offensively and defensively spelled smooth sailing and a second set victory. Northern Cass woke up in the third, thanks in no small part to senior, Haidyn Crockett’s seven kills. Even with her spark on offense, the Burros nearly took the match in straight sets, as both teams were tied at 19 in the third. But the Jaguars pulled away in the end, scoring six of the last nine points to send the match to a fourth set. In the fourth, Crockett once again jolted the Jaguars with four kills. It was tied at 12 in the fourth, when the Jaguars pulled away once again, scoring thirteen of the last twenty points to send it to a deciding fifth set. In the final set, HCV senior, Carsi Hatlestad, came alive with three kills and three blocks. That run helped the Burros go on a 4-0 run to lead 9-5 enroute to the match victory.

Hatlestad led the Burros with eight kills and seven blocks. Senior, Haley Smelden, added six kills, three blocks, and an ace while Anderson finished with five aces, three kills, and three blocks for HCV. Crockett led the Jaguars with thirteen kills while classmate, Addy Winterquist, added ten. The Burros have now won seven straight and improve to 10-1 in all competitions. The loss snaps the Jaguars’ three-game winning streak, dropping to 9-4 in all competitions. The Burros will look to keep rolling at home against Central Cass while Northern Cass will look to get back on track, remaining at home against Enderlin. Both matches are set for Thursday.
