Hillsboro Central Valley vs Oakes
Recap
The Oakes Tornadoes made an early statement against the Hillsboro/Central Valley Burros, scoring on their opening drive enroute to a 33-7 ND Class A Region 1 Football victory Friday night.
That opening drive went 69 yards in eleven plays, resulting in a nine-yard rushing touchdown, the first of three all-purpose touchdowns, for Oakes senior, Chris Titus. A two-point conversion for senior running back, Carter Ptacek, made it 8-0 Oakes. The Tornadoes looked like they would score quickly again, after an HCV botched punt put the ball at the Burro 19. But the Burro defense locked down, allowing no yards on three incompletions and a rush for zero.
The Burros would gather momentum over the next few drives, with their longest drive of the game coming off an Oakes fumble. Unfortunately for the Burros that drive in the second quarter stalled at the Oakes 39. On the very next play, Oakes sophomore quarterback, Beau Thorpe, tossed the ball to senior, Dylan Harris. Harris caught it about a dozen yards down the field, and did the rest, breaking tackles and speeding past the Burro defenders on his way to a 61-yard touchdown. A few drives later, the Tornadoes took advantage of another Burro botched punt, needing just a few plays to give Titus his second rushing touchdown of the night. That two-yard punch-in would give Oakes a 20-0 lead going into halftime.
HCV had the opportunity to receive the 2nd half kickoff. However, Burro returner Bryce Miller, gambled that the ball would go out of bounds. It did not, allowing Oakes to recover an unintentional onside kick at the Burro 21. Oakes would need just three plays to get back on the scoreboard, as Thorpe connected with Titus in the end zone. A Thorpe extra point made it 27-0 Oakes. The Tornadoes would add one more touchdown on their next possession, with a Ptacek rush from seven yards out, to make it 33-0 Oakes. The Burros would score their only touchdown of the game on the very next drive, marching the ball 75 yards down the field in ten plays, and ending in redemption. Miller turned the gaff to open the second half into a 14-yard touchdown reception from Burro starting quarterback, Tyson Leshuk. The extra point was good, making that the final point scored.
With the victory, Oakes remains in fourth place in the Class A Region 1 standings, occupying the final playoff spot with two weeks remaining. HCV has officially been eliminated from playoff contention with the loss. Oakes (3-3/3-2) has now won three straight after dropping their first three games and will host Central Cass next Friday before closing out the season the week after at Kindred. Meanwhile, the Burros drop to 1-6 (0-5) and will finish out their last two weeks at Lisbon next Friday and home against Northern Cass the week after.
