Explosive plays put the Oakes Tornadoes ahead at halftime and a ball-control offense in the second half kept them in the lead to defeat the Hillsboro/Central Valley Burros 26-21. The Burros opened the game with a 53-yard Touchdown run from Tyson Leshuk on the third pay of the game for the first score while the Tornadoes driving down the field to score on their first possession with Reese Nitschke hauling in a 14-yard pass for the score. Sawyer Owens would put the Burros ahead early in the second quarter with a Touchdown run on 4th and goal until Beau Thorpe completed his second and third Touchdown passes of the first half with a pair of passes to David Bakke to put Oakes up 19-14 at halftime. Andrew Rosendahl ripped off a 58-yard Touchdown run to open the third quarter and the Burros capitalized on a muffed punt with a 24-yard Touchdown pass from Leshuk to Bryce Miller to get within one score entering the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter Oakes started with a 7:27 drive that ultimately ended in a missed field goal attempt but put the Burros at thier own 20-yardline needing to drive for a go-ahead score. After a holding penalty pushed the Burros back, a 14-yard gain made it 4th and 2 for the Burros offense. Oakes defense made a stand to force the turnover on downs – and limit the Burro offense to just four plays the entire fourth quarter – with their offense picking up the first down they needed to run out the clock for their first win of the season. Oakes is now 1-1 and will travel to play MayPort-C-G next week while the Burros, now 2-1, will host Ellendale-Edgeley-Kulm.
