Recap
Kelliher/Northome vs. EGF Sacred Heart
Thief River Falls, MN — The Sacred Heart Eagles won the Section 8A Girls Basketball Championship on Friday night, after beating the Kelliher/Northome Mustangs 70-56.
Sacred Heart, who had hardly trailed throughout the course of the section playoffs, grabbed the advantage early going up 11-6. Kelliher/Northome battled foul trouble in the first half with Forward Charlie Hallstrom picking up three fouls in the first 1:57 of the first half. Hallstrom had to sit the rest of the first half and Sacred Heart immediately took advantage feeding the rock inside the Sophomore Lexi Lawrence you scored 14 first half points. The Eagles led 39-34 at halftime.
In the second half Kelliher/Northome got their original starting five back on the floor as they scratched their way back to a 51-51 tie. From that point though however, Sacred Heart would catch fire from deep that jolted the Eagles into a 12-0 scoring run to take a 63-51 lead with just four minutes to play. That run would Sacred Heart firmly in the drivers seat on the way to the 70-56 win and their first Section Championship since 2016.
Sacred Heart will take a 24-6 record into the State Class A Tournament. For Kelliher/Northome, competing for a section title next season is a real possibility as the Mustangs graduate just one senior.
