Kelliher/Northome vs. Warren-Alvarado-Oslo

Thief River Falls, MN — The Kelliher/Northome Mustangs beat the Warren-Alvardo -Oslo Ponies 66-46 Tuesday night to advance to the Section 8A Girls Basketball Championship.

It was actually the Ponies who got off to the hot start early in Tuesday nights contes. The Ponies led 7-1 in the first few minutes as the Mustangs struggled to get in a groove offensively. However, Keliher/Northome, an ultra aggressive defensive team, used their physical play  to make the Ponies discombobulated on offense. After the 7-1 deficit, Kelliher/Northome would go on a 15-4  scoring run to take a 16-11 lead with 10:47 to go in the first half. From there the rest of the half stayed within striking distance for WAO,  as they would head into the locker room down 29-19.

Right away in half number two, the Warren-Alvardo-Oslo offense was seemingly back on track as they trailed just 35-30 with 14:20 to play in the game. Unfortunately, the five point deficit was as slim as the margin would be in the second half. An 8-0 Mustangs scoring run lifted their lead to 44-30 and made the deficit insurmountable for the Ponies as they were never within single digits for the rest of the game. The Mustangs physical, gritty, and aggressive style of defense proved to be too much for the Ponies down the stretch as Kelliher/Northome won 66-46.

With the win Kelliher/Northome will play in the Section 8A Girls Basketball Championship for the first time in program history on Friday night. The East’s #1 Seed will take on the West #3 Seed East Grand Forks Sacred Heart for the Section Crown. Game time is set for 7 pm from Ralph Eneglestad Arena Friday night. KKCQ 96.7 FM and YourLiveEvent.com will have live game coverage with the pregame show beginning at 6:30.
