Kindred vs Thompson
Recap
The Thompson Tommies finished out their 2024 home football schedule against the ND Class 11A top-ranked Kindred Vikings, Friday. Despite being without their star quarterback, Jake Starcevic, for the third consecutive week, the Vikings once again proved they have the depth to continue their victory march with a convincing 52-13 win over the Tommies.
The game started out chaotic as on the first Thompson drive, starting quarterback, Gavin Krogstad, threw an interception to Kindred’s Kylan Swenson. Swenson took the ball near the Thompson 20 before fumbling the ball back to Thompson. From that point on, it was fairly routine for the Vikings as they scored touchdowns on four of their next five possessions. Myles Thielges, Hunter Bindas, Brock Johnson, and Izaak Spelhaug all found the end zone for the Vikings, with Bindas and Johnson scoring from over 40 yards. Andrew Haley knocked in four extra points as well to make it 28-0 Kindred at the half.
The Vikings picked up where they left off to start the second half, as Johnson scored his second touchdown of the game from over 40 yards out. Another Haley extra point and a safety on their next defensive possession quickly made it 37-0 Kindred. Jack McDonald would add another Kindred touchdown on the ensuing possession, and another Haley extra point made it 44-0 Vikings. Thompson would avoid the shutout, scoring on their next possession. Krogstad connected with fellow senior, Thomas Schumacher, for the longest play of the game, a 54-yard pass. That pass got the ball down to the Kindred 15. On the very next play, Krogstad took it in himself for the touchdown. Schumacher’s extra point made it 44-7. Both teams would trade touchdowns from the relievers as Brayden Olson and Rylan Penas reached the end zone for Kindred and Thompson respectively. Tanner Menge added a two-point conversion on the last Kindred touchdown to make it the final 52-13 score.
Despite the setback, the Tommies came away scoring the most points against the Kindred defense this season. However, with the loss, the Tommies are now eliminated from playoff contention. With the win, Kindred clinches the Region 1 regular season championship and the top seed from the region. Kindred (8-0, 6-0) will close out the regular season at home against Oakes next Friday. Thompson (3-4, 2-4) will try to finish the season strong at Lisbon.
