It was a battle of two of the three #1s in North Dakota Girls Basketball Saturday afternoon as Thompson hosted Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich. Thompson came into their final contest of 2023 at 6-0 and the top ranked team in Class A, while LAEM entered the contest at 7-0, the top team in Class B. It was a tight start, but Thompson surged ahead, toppling the Cardinals, 68-48.

The two teams were tied at five in the first quarter, when Thompson took off on a 13-4 run to close the quarter with an 18-9 lead. They never looked back, leading 36-24 at halftime, 53-38 at the end of the third, and pushing the lead past 20 more than once in the fourth quarter.

It was a balanced attack for the Thompson offense. Seven different Tommies scored at least five points, led by Addison Sage’s 16 and Kya Hurst’s 14. Seniors Brenna Martin and Sydney Schwabe also added a dozen and ten respectively in the victory. Cora Badding led the Cardinals with 17 while Jaylynn Swanson added eleven.

With the win, Thompson improves to 7-0 while LAEM drops to 7-1. Thompson opens 2024 at home, Thursday against Hatton/Northwood. The Cardinals will look to bounce back as they open 2024, also Thursday, at Grafton.
