Clearbrook, MN — “Life without Kendra (Syverson) is an adjustment.” This according to Mahnomen/Waubun Thunderbirds Head Girls Basketball Coach Zack Qual after their Monday night win over the Clearbrook-Gonvick Bears 51-43.

The Thunderbirds Monday night victory wasn’t exactly pretty after leading by only three at the break 27-24 mostly in part of Clearbrook-Gonvick winning the first half rebounding battle 22-5. In the second half though however, Senior Alaina Bevins was leaned on in the scoring department tallying 14 of her game high 22 points in the second half. The Thunderbirds lead hung within reach for Clearbrook-Gonvick but their was a stretch where Bears Sophomore and leading scorer Allison LaVine had to sit out for multiple minutes with four fouls and that’s when the Thunderbirds were able to balloon their lead to as much as 10 and hang on late for the eight point win and get back to .500 on the season at 9-9.

The Thunderbirds will play the second of a back to back on Tuesday night when they host Lake Park-Audubon. Clearbrook-Gonvick is now 2-17 this season and will play their annual afternoon game this Friday against Lake of the Woods at 1:30 pm in front of the entire Clearbrook-Gonvick student body.
