Clearbrook, MN — Mahnomen/Waubun rides a handful of large runs to their sweep over Clearbrook-Gonvick (25-19, 25-16, 25-14).

In the first set it was Clearbrook-Gonvick who got the first run to propel them to a 5-3 lead, but Mahnomen/Waubun was able to rattle off 7 in a row to make it 10-5. The two team went back and forth the whole set up until the end when the Thunderbirds scored the last 4 to close set one 25-19.

In set two it again went back and forth, but after breaking the 4-4 tie, Mahnomen/Waubun scored 6 straight. Clearbrook-Gonvick made a run of their own scoring 5 straight, but still found themselves trailing 17-15. The Thunderbirds called a timeout after that 5th point and responded with 5 points of their own immediately after to go up 22-15 and finished the set on an 8-1 run to win 25-16. The Thunderbirds had 3 kills each from Macey Jasken, Kennedy McArthur, and Nenookaasi Poitra in the set.

In the third set, Clearbrook-Gonvick scored first, but after that, it was all Thunderbirds as they immediately put up the next 6 points. That accelerated them out to an eventual 10 point lead in the set. The Bears were able to get it within 3 at 16-13 after an 8-1 run of their own, but the Thunderbirds capped the sweep with a 9-1 run, including an 8-0 run on the way. It was a Kennedy McArthur show in the 3rd set as she had 6 of her 10 kills and 1 of her 2 aces all come in the set. Poitra also had 3 of her 5 aces in the final frame.

Mahnomen/Waubun improves to 4-4 in the season and 2-2 in section 8A and will be back in action on Thursday at home against Bagley. comments from MW coach Skyler Presler SkylerP 5511E
