Recap

Early morning hoops didn’t showcase any tired legs as the offenses were flowing early on. Deer River’s first 2 buckets were from beyond the arc and that was a preview of what was to come throughout the remainder of the first half. The first half battle came down to Thunderbirds’ Ethan Jackson battling down low with his 19 first half points vs the 8 three’s hit by the Warriors. It was a 43-35 lead at the break for the Warriors.

Both teams traded turnovers to start the second half, but then they would trade buckets until the Thunderbirds got it within 2. Then immediately after the Warriors would answer with a 10-2 run to get their largest lead of the game of 10. It would hang around a 6-10 lead until Mahnomen/Waubun thundered back with a late 7-1 to get them within 2 at 72-70. Mahnomen/Waubun’s Anthony Thompson was a big reason for the charge back as he had 18 second half points. Free throws became the name of the game as Deer River went 1-2 from the charity strip in back-to-back possessions to grow the lead back to 4.  A quick bucket by the Thunderbirds brought it back within 2. With just under 30 seconds left, Deer River was able to waste the clock all the way down to 8 seconds before Mahnomen/Waubun fouled. Kevin Doerr Jr. went 1-2 to bring it to a 3 point lead. Deer River chose to foul before Mahnomen/Waubun got past half court, but Anthony Thompson went 2-2 to bring that deficit to 1. Kevin Doerr Jr. again would be sent to the free throw line where he went 1-2 again. So with 4 seconds remaining the Thunderbirds threw it to half court and got two more quick passes to set up a good look from the top of the key for Tommy Phillips for the win, but it was wide right. Deer River escaped with the 2 point win.

Lawrence Bowstring came in 18 points away from 1,000 career points and was able to hit that mark halfway through the second half on his way to a 25 point double-double. A special moment for him as he was able to go into the crowd and celebrate with his family.
