Recap

The Thompson Tommies came out on top over Northern Cass in a topsy-turvy football contest Friday night, 29-20.

Both teams came out of the gate swinging, scoring on their opening possessions. For the second straight week, Thompson quarterback Drew Overby threw a touchdown pass on a fourth down early in the game, this time a 20-yarder to Brody Gibson to make it 6-0 Thompson. The Jaguars responded quickly with a 53-yard passing touchdown from Julian Leichtenberg to Antonio Sanchez. On the very next play, the Jaguars recovered an onside kick. Unable to turn that opportunity into a score, it remained a 6-6 tie until Thompson regained the lead late in the second quarter with a ten-yard touchdown pass from Overby to Josh Juve. A two-point conversion made it 14-6 Thompson. Two drives later, Northern Cass closed the gap after a Keelan Monson pick-six cut the lead to two. The ensuing two-point conversion failed, making it 14-12 Thompson. The Jaguars had a chance late in the first half to take their first lead of the game, but place kicker Reed Volden missed a 31-yard field goal to keep the score 14-12 Thompson at the half.

Northern Cass wasted no time taking the lead at the start of the second half, with a 63-yard Matthew Hoppe rushing touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. A two-point conversion added on made it 20-14 Northern Cass. Unfortunately for the Jaguars, that was the only offensive spark they had for the rest of the game. Thompson scored 15 unanswered off a Juve pick-six and a Karter Peterson receiving touchdown, with a two-point conversion and extra point respectively, to make it the 29-20 final. Thompson pounced on four Northern Cass Second Half turnovers (three interceptions and one fumble) to keep the Jaguar offense limited.

Despite a season high in points, and season low in points allowed, Northern Cass comes up short for the seventh time in seven tries. The Jaguars will have two more chances to avoid a winless season, both on the road against Oak Grove and Oakes. Thompson improves to 4-3 and will look to sneak inside the playoffs with two big matchups remaining. The Tommies host undefeated Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich next Friday before wrapping up their regular season at Cavalier the week after.
