Thompson 35, Park River Area 20

Rylan Penas rushed for 119 yards and 3 touchdowns and Dex Avdem threw for 202 yards and 2 TDs as 4th ranked Thompson defeated Park River Area 35-20 Friday night in Thompson.

The Tommies (4-0, 2-0 in Region 2A) stopped Park River Area four times on fourth down in the second half as Thompson outscored the Aggies 21-6 in the second half.

Park River Area took the opening kickoff and drove 66 yards in 13 plays to open the scoring. Quarterback Jaxon Omdahl scored on a one yard run to put the Aggies up 6-0 after the extra point kick missed.

Thompson responded late in the first frame when Penas scored on a 2 yard run.  Adrian Brend’s PAT gave the Tommies a 7-6 lead.  Then in the second quarter, Avdem passed 9 yards to Eli Gemmill for a TD to make the score 14-6.

The Aggies tied the game with 3 seconds left in the half when Omdahl threw a 8 yard TD pass to Noah Troftgruben, then Omdahl ran a 2 point conversion to make the score 14 all at the half.

Thompson took the second half kickoff and drove 65 yards in 6 plays for the go-ahead score.  Penas ran 17 yards for the TD to make it 21-14.  Then with 1:12 to go in the third quarter, Penas ran 58 yards for his third score of the game to put the Tommies up 28-14 after 3 quarters.

Then in the fourth quarter, Avdem threw a 32 yard TD pass to Jack Krogstad to make the score 35-14 with 7:57 to play.  Park River Area got a consolation touchdown with 5:26 to play when Omdahl and Troftgruben connected on a 5 yard score, making the final score 35-20.

Omdahl completed 22 of 50 passes for 261 yards and 2 touchdowns with one interception…and ran 19 times for 55 yards and a TD.  Wyatt Carlson caught 9 passes for 96 yards, while Troftgruben caught 8 passes for 92 yards.  Park River Area had 261 yards passing and 82 yards rushing for 343 yards total offense.

Avdem rushed 10 times for 99 yards while completing 16 of 25 passes for 202 yards and 2 TDs. Eli Gemmill caught 7 passes for 104 yards and a TD and also had an interception.

Thompson travels to Harvey-Wells County next Friday, while Park River Area plays at Carrington.
