For the second year in a row, Holdingford ended the Pequot Lakes Patriot’s softball season with a 5-4 victory at St. Ben’s. This time around, it took nine innings and ended with a bang as Claire Christen hit a walk-off home run to send the Patriots packing.

The Huskers scored in the bottom of the first and held that lead until the fifth. Emme Sullivan smacked her second home run of the year with Lydia Allyn on third to lift the Patriots to a 2-1 lead. It would be short-lived as Holdingford answered with two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to go back up 3-2.

Pequot Lakes tied the game in the top of the seventh forcing Holdingford to bat. The Huskers loaded the bases with one out, and Anna Volkers lined out to Halie Bengston who then fell on the bag to end the inning with a double-play.

The Patriots took the lead again in the top of the eighth and a two-out RBI single from Allyn, but again Holdingford answered in the bottom half with an unearned run.

After the Patriots went down in order in the top of the ninth, Georgia James retired the first two batters from Holdingford when Christen stepped up. Getting ahead 3-1, she sat on the fastball and blasted it over the left field fence to end the game.

Avery Gorr went 3-4 and Allyn was 3-3 for the Patriots, who end the season 12-11 and graduates five seniors.
