7AA Championship Pequot Lakes vs Pierz

The Pequot Lakes Patriots clinched their 5th straight 7AA boys basketball title with a dominating performance to eliminate Granite Ridge rival Pierz.

After a back-and-forth first four minutes, the Patriots started to convert Pioneers’ turnovers into points and ran away with the section title. Down 9-7, Pequot Lakes scored the next 18 points and outscored Pierz 31-5 through the remainder of the first half, taking a 38-14 lead into the locker room.

Once again, the Patriots didn’t allow their opponent to begin any sort of a comeback run, pushing the lead to as high as 43 points and closing out the game at 73-35. The Patriots take a 28-1 record and a 21-game winning streak into the state tournament, outscoring their section tournament opponents by a staggering 217-110.

Blake Spiczka led the charge for the Patriots with 19 points and 4 assists. Rock Holubar had 16, Sam Afagwu 15 and Tollef Birkeland 12.

Pierz finished at 21-8 and will graduate just one senior, Nate Cekalla, who led the Pioneers with 11 points.
