Pequot Lakes at Waseca

A 12-2 Waseca run to end the game pushed the Pequot Lakes Patriots into the consolation rounds for the fourth straight year to start state boys basketball tournament.
After trailing 25-23 at the half, the Patriots started the second half scoring the first six points to go up by four. Waseca responded with six straight of their own to grab a 31-29 advantage. Pequot Lakes answered the call with a 10-2 run, and as the clock rolled under 5:00 to play the Patriots led 41-35. Waseca brought out an extremely aggressive full court press that the Patriots had trouble handling. Samuel Afagwu broke free for a layup to make it 45-41 Pequot Lakes with 1:55 to play, but the Blue Jays rattled off the 12-2 run keyed by Patriots turnovers to swipe the win 49-45.
Demarius Russell lead Waseca with 16 points, 8 assists and 6 steals. Deron Russell added 13 and Carson Ohnstad finished with ten, including a back-breaking three that put Waseca up front 47-45 with 46 seconds to go.
Pequot Lakes was lead by Harrison Kennen’s 10 points, 8 rebounds, 5 blocks and 4 assists. Ethan Quale finished with 9.
The Blue Jays (31-0) advance to the championship semifinals Friday night. The Patriots (23-8) will try to bounce back in the consolation semifinals Wednesday night. Pregame is 7:30pm on KLKS Talk 100.1 & rjbroadcasting.com.
