Red Lake County vs. Dawson-Boyd

Minneapolis, MN — The Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks beat the Red Lake County Rebels 80-66 in the State Class A Boys Basketball Semifinals on Friday afternoon.

The storyline going into the game Friday was, how does Red Lake county contend with the size of Dawson-Boyd? While the Blackjacks used the advantage all game, Red Lake County gave D-B some fits with their ability to penetrate the lane and their finishing ability around the rim. The firs 18 minutes was tight from start to finish. The largest lead of the half was eight points, 38-30 for Dawson-Boyd as they made a push in the final two minutes of the half. However, Red Lake County would respond with baskets on back-to-back possessions including a 3-pointer by Connor Duden nearly as time expired to cut the lead 38-35, Dawson-Boyd at the half.

In the second half, the deficit was no more than six points leading up to the first T.V. timeout. Dawson-Boyd lead 51-49. Coming out of that break, the Blackjacks would make a 9-0 run pushing their lead to eleven, 60-49. That run would prove to be the difference in the game as Red Lake County would push back on the deficit but could only get as close to five points 63-58 with 5:11 to play in the game. For the rest of the game, Dawson-Boyd would outscore Red Lake County 17-8 and win the game 80-66.

With the win, Dawson-Boyd is now 29-3 and will play the Cherry Tigers in the State Class A Championship, who has lost only one game this season and it was to Red Lake County back in February. For the Rebels they fall to 30-3 and will play in the third place Saturday morning versus the Nevis Tigers. The game will be played at the Gangeloff Center on the campus of Concordia-St. Paul. KKCQ 96.7 FM will have gave coverage with the pregame show starting at 9:30 a.m. and the opening tip-off at 10 a.m.
