State Class A Quarterfinals – Red Lake County Rebels vs. Goodhue Wildcats

Minneapolis, MN — The Red Lake County Rebels escaped with a 68-61 win over the Goodhue Wildcats in the State Class A Quarterfinals on Thursday night.

The Rebels never trailed in Thursday nights contest but it certainly was not a stress free night. The Rebels jumped out to a 13-5 lead early in the first half but Goodhue would make their first run of the game of 9-3 to cut the deficit to two points with eight minutest to play. For the rest of the half, the Rebels offense would find their rhythm outscoring the Wildcats 19-8 the rest of the way and taking a 35-22 lead at the half.

In half number two, Red Lake County took control. Taking a 23 point lead with 13 minutes to play. From that point, it seemed like the Goodhue Wildcats didn’t miss a shot. The Wildcats would go on a 20-0 run to make it a contest but despite the run, the Wildcats never took the lead. In the final stages of the second half inside a timeout, Red Lake County Head Coach Steve Philion told his team, “Get Connor (Duden) the ball and he’ll take us to the promise land.” And that is exactly what Duden did scoring 10 of his 14 points in the second half. The Rebels played the final three minutes of the game without Owen Chervestad who went down with a cramp but the Rebels who had four players in double figures got major contributions from other players as they hung onto the 68-61 victory.

The Rebels improve to 30-2 on the season and will take on the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks in the State Semifinals tomorrow afternoon at 2 pm from Williams Arena at the University of Minnesota. Pregame show begins at 1:30 pm on KKCQ 96.7 FM.
