Red Lake County vs. Nevis

St. Paul, MN — The Red Lake County Rebels placed 3rd in the Minnesota State Class A Boys Basketball tournament after beating the Nevis Tigers 67-62 on Saturday morning.

The Rebels, who had some tough shooting games in the quarterfinals and semifinals, came out hot right out of gate taking a 14-3 just four minutes into the game. The Rebels would grow that lead even further to 24-19 at around the 10 minute mark of the half 24-9. From there, Nevis would make a much needed 7-0 run to keep the game within striking distance headed into halftime. Their run would cut the lead to single digits as both teams would trade baskets the rest of the half and Red Lake County had the 37-26 lead heading into the locker room.

In the second half it was Nevis who came out of the gats hot offensively. The Tigers would make their second 7-0 run of the game to make it a four point game, 37-33. The closest they had been since early in the first moments of the game. The two teams would duke it out trading blows for the next nine minutes. Nevis would throw would land a big blow with 7:30 to tie tying the game at 52-52. In the final stages of the game, the trend was as similar as the quarterfinals for Red Lake County. They allowed Nevis to tie the game but the Tigers would never enjoy a lead in the second half or during the course of the game. The Rebels would stretch their lead to eight points with three minutes to play but the Tigers would never go away scoring the next four points to cut the deficit to 62-58. In the final 1:44, free throws would seal the game for Red Lake County scoring their final five points from the line and winning the game 67-62.

With the win, Red Lake County finishes 3rd in the State Tournament in their first ever appearance. The Rebels finished their historic season 31-3 overall and graduate four Seniors: Owen Chervestad, Luke Peterson, Ethan Majeres, Gavin Thomas.

The Nevis Tigers finish their season 27-6 overall and a 4th place finish at the state tournament.
