Thompson 54, Rugby 18

Charlie Yon ran for 260 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Gavin Oster passed for 128 yards and 3 scores and also ran for a TD as Thompson defeated Rugby 54-18 Friday night in Thompson.

The Tommies accumulated 475 yards in total offense (347 rushing, 128 passing) as they improved to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in Region 2 play.

Rugby had 299 yards in total offense (82 rushing, 217 passing) as the Panthers fall to 1-6 and 0-5.

It was a close game in the first half, with Thompson leading 8-6 after one quarter and 16-12 at halftime.

After a one yard TD run by Rugby’s Kiefer Fritz put the Panthers ahead 18-16 in the third quarter, Oster ran for a 21 yard score that put the Tommies ahead 24-18 and Thompson never trailed after that.

Thompson would score twice within 1:08 later that third quarter after Brady Ripplinger caught a deflected pass and scored from 41 yards out to make it 32-18.  (Ripplinger’s first catch of the season, by the way) Then after a Rugby four and out, Yon scored a 35 yard TD to put Thompson ahead 38-18 after three quarters.

Yon and Rylan Penas scored fourth quarter touchdown runs to end the scoring.

Oster completed 10 of 14 passes for 128 yards and 3 touchdowns with one interception.  Cash Danner caught 5 passes for 56 yards and 2 Thompson TDs.  Yon’s 260 yards rushing came on 19 carries.

Fritz completed 13 of 29 passes for 179 yards and a TD.  Jove Risovi caught 4 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown for Rugby.  Alec Bohl led the Panther running attack with 26 yards on 16 carries.
