Thompson 8, Hillsboro/Central Valley 6 Region 2 Baseball Second Title Game
Jeromy Tyce’s 2-run single in the sixth inning broke a 6-all tie and propelled Thompson to an 8-6 win over Hillsboro/Central Valley Friday at Mayville State. HCV was eliminated in the double elimination tournament.
HCV started the game hot with 4 first inning runs. Riley Richter’s sacrifice fly was followed by rbi singles from Austin Cotton, Brayden Chenault and Elijah Smallbeck. Thompson responded with 2 in the bottom of the first; one scored on a wild pitch, the other on an error.
Then Thompson grabbed the lead in the bottom of the third. Will Welke singled in one run, then Drew Odenbach doubled in 2 more to put the Tommies ahead 5-4.
The Burros regained the lead in the top of the fourth on a 2 run single by Richter to make it 6-5, HCV.
It stayed that way until the sixth inning. Thompson had runners on first and second with 2 out, when Braden Tyce singled to tie the game at 6. The next batter, Jeromy Tyce (Braden’s brother) hit a 2 run single to center to put the Tommies back in front 8-6.
HCV led off the top of the seventh with back to back walks, followed by a force play. Then Tyson Leshuk lined to Thompson shortstop Thomas Schumacher, who threw to first to double off the runner on first to end the game and send Thompson to its fourth consecutive State Class B tournament.
Odenbach was the winning pitcher for Thompson (22-2). He pitched a scoreless sixth inning in relief of starting pitcher Schumacher, who went 5 innings with 9 hits, 6 runs (5 earned), 5 walks and 3 strikeouts. Kaden Loiland pitched the seventh inning to get the save.
At the plate, Odenbach was 2 for 3 with 2 rbi.
Bryce Miller took the loss for the Burros. He came in to relieve starter Chase Haffely and pitched 3 innings, allowing 5 hits, 3 runs and a hit batter. Haffely threw the first 2 2/3 innings, allowing 3 hits, 5 runs (3 earned) with 3 walks, 2 strikeouts and a wild pitch. Tyson Sundby pitched the final 1/3 of an inning for the Burros (15-12).
Ryan Richter was one for one with 3 rbi for HCV. Alexander Dufner and Brayden Chenault each had two hits for the Burros.
Thompson, the 3-time defending State Class B Baseball champions, advance to the State Tournament next week in Fargo.
