Thompson 48, Four Winds/Minnewaukan 44
Thompson advanced to the North Dakota Class A Region 2 boys basketball championship game with a 48-44 victory over Four Winds/Minnewaukan Tuesday night in Grand Forks.
The game was a defensive struggle with Thompson leading 20-16 at halftime. Four Winds/Minnewaukan fought back in the third quarter, grabbing a 24-21 lead at one stage, until the Tommies rallied to lead 32-31 after three quarters.
Then Thompson started the final quarter with an 8-0 run to keep the lead. The Indians made it a nail-biter down the stretch…as Joran Lohnes made a three pointer with 7.1 seconds to play to cut Thompson’s lead to 46-44. A second later, Gavin Krogstad was fouled and made two free throws to raise the Tommies’ advantage to 48-44, which is how the game ended.
Krogstad led Thompson (15-7) with 13 points; Karter Peterson added 11 and Noah Hippen 10.
Ronald McKay, Dorvan McKay and Joran Lohness scored 8 points apiece for Four WInds-Minnewaukan (15-8).
Thompson will face Devils Lake Thursday night for the Region 2 championship. Four Winds-Minnewaukan takes on Grafton for third place on Thursday.
