FB West Central Area at Polk Co West

West Central Area scored on its first three possessions and went on to a 38-12 victory over Polk County West Thursday night in Climax in the season opener for both teams.

The night started ominously for the Thunder when they fumbled the opening kickoff and West Central Area recovered at the PCW 35.  Five plays later, Tucker McGee scored on a 17 yard run and a two point conversion put the Knights ahead 8-0.

On WCA’s next possession, quarterback Owen Gruchow scored on a 47 yard run.  Another two point conversion made it 16-0 with 7:26 to go in the first quarter.

After a three and out, West Central Area’s Sam Hanson scored on a 50 yard run.  A pass to Hanson for two points put the Knights in front 24-0.

Polk County West got on the board early in the second quarter on Sawyer Horken’s 14 yard touchdown run.  The conversion try missed and WCA led 24-6 at halftime.

The Knights started the third quarter with a 6 play, 63 yard drive that ended on a 20 yard TD run by Gruchow.  West Central Area led 30-6 after three quarters.

Polk County West scored on the first play of the fourth quarter on a 52 yard pass from Will Zavoral to Horken to make the score 30-12.  The Knights responded with a 51 yard halfback pass from Hanson to Ben Bye.  Gruchow’s two point conversion made the score 38-12 and that’s how it ended.

WCA’s Hanson rushed 7 times for 85 yards and a touchdown, caught one pass for 37 and was one for one passing for 51 yards and a touchdown.  Gruchow completed 5 of 10 passes for 102 yards with an interception…while rushing for 64 yards on 8 carries and two touchdowns.

Horken led Polk County West’s offense with 8 carries for 44 yards and a touchdown plus 3 catches for 60 yards and a touchdown.

Polk County West will play Mahnomen/Waubun on Friday, Sept. 6 at East Grand Forks.
